Kalkan
Kalkan is an important stop on this stretch of the coast, not least because it is the only safe harbour for some miles in each direction. That it comes at the end (or begining) of a hard sail past the Seven Capes is, however, not the only reason that you will probably want to spend at least a day here, possibly more.
Kalkan is a pretty fishing and trading port with both Greek and Turkish heritage. The local authorities' attempts to preserve this while allowing the area to be developed for tourism has, on balance, been more successful than not.
|
The town has a lively atmosphere with plenty of fine bars and restaurants, and all with a much lower "Hassle Factor" than, for example, Fethiye.
The harbour can get very crowded by late afternoon but there is a good anchorage about two miles NW if there is no space left at the quayside.
|
In addition to Kalkan's own small beaches, Patara (right) has one of the best beaches in this end of the Mediterranean, much less crowded than Olu Deniz and is only 10 to 20 miles away (it is a long beach). Patara is also an important historical site, having been the port for Xanthos. Xanthos itself is only a few miles away and, in addition to having been the capital of Lycia, was the birthplace of Bishop Nicholas of Myra who was later canonised and emigrated to the North Pole - yes, that Saint Nicholas!
