Rhodes
Rhodes is a Greek island and, having its own international airport, is a good alternative to Gocek as a starting point for your sailing holiday, especially if you want to concentrate on the Greek islands.
Rhodes has a long history as a major power in the Mediterranean in its own right and as a staging post for The Crusades.
More about the history of Rhodes...
Being some 40 miles long and 20 miles wide, it is probably worth spending several days here.
Rhodes Town
The town of Rhodes sits at the Northern end of the island, about 6 hours sail from Marmaris and 7 to 10 hours from Fethiye. It is a busy commercial port but Mandraki Harbour, best for yachts, is the oldest, most scenic of the three harbours and is probably the site of the Colossus.
Take a walk around the Old Town, built by the Crusaders. Places to visit include the Palace of The Grand Masters, The Street of Knights and the Castle of The Knights of St. John and the Knights' Hospital. If time allows, you should also visit the Archeological Institute and the Byzantine Museum.
Spreading up the hill is the New Town, a vibrant, bustling place with plenty of opportunities to spend your hard earned money, day or night.
