Lindos
Although only a large village today, Lindos, on the east coast of Rhodes and built in the 12th Century B.C., was one of the founding cities of the Dorian Hexapolis, a major Mediterranean power in ancient times. The bay is dominated by the Acropolis of Athena some 500 feet above the water. Click on the picture below for a larger panorama of the bay.
The village is very pretty with a warren of staircases and alleyways, like Capri but without the designer labels. However, it can be painfully crowded by mid-morning with day trippers being bussed in from nearby resorts such as Phaliraki and even from Rhodes Town itself. By early afternoon, the beach resembles a seal colony.
A good way to deal with it is to see the sights before 10 or after 5 and spend the heat of the day swimming or relaxing on the boat or in the shade of one of the many excellent tavernas. Or all four...
